The Woodstock Film Festival has unveiled its 13th Anniversary poster image, an assemblage made entirely from recycled linoleum flooring called “Eye of the World” by Hudson Valley artist Bill Miller.

This year's festival will be held October 10 -14 in the arts colony of Woodstock and across the Hudson Valley region including the historic towns of Kingston, Rhinebeck, Rosendale, and Saugerties. An exhibit of Miller’s work will be on display in Woodstock during the Festival at VARGA Gallery, next door to Upstate Films, one of WFF’s primary screening venues.

Miller has been working with vintage linoleum for almost 20 years, using only the found surface and adding no paint to create his images. His innovative and unexpected use of familiar patterns taps into the medium's nostalgic qualities, imparting a sense of history and rediscovery within each collage. His subjects range from bucolic landscapes to fiercely political pieces incorporating iconic news and pop culture images that helped shape our society’s common memory.

Miller joins notable artists Peter Max, Milton Glaser and Bill Plympton who were among those previously selected for this honor. In 2010, Miller was chosen to create the cover image for the Frank Zappa CD “Congress Shall Make No Law”, issued to mark the 25th anniversary of Zappa’s testimony on Capitol Hill in support of artistic free speech. He has had many solo shows across the country including in NYC, LA, Philadelphia, Seattle, New Orleans, Austin, Pittsburgh and just outside of Woodstock at James Cox Gallery. His work has been featured byNational Geographic Channel, New York Times, LA Times, Chicago Tribune and in the coffee table book Found Object Art. This year Miller is one of only two Americans accepted into Drap Art ‘12, a prestigious international exhibition of recycled art opening in Barcelona this September. He will also have a solo show beginning this November at Mr. Rain’s Fun House at the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore, MD.

Woodstock has long been known as center for creativity and the Film Festival is an increasingly important platform for independent voices from around the world. “It’s amazing what Miller can do with old flooring and his innovative use of recycled materials is very much in alignment with the spirit of Woodstock,” said WFF co-founder and executive director Meira Blaustein. ”The dramatic image he created for this year’s poster literally depicts the Eye of the World gazing out from right here in the Hudson Valley, a perfect metaphor for the Woodstock Film Festival.”

“It’s a real honor and privilege to be selected,” said Miller. “I hope my interpretation of this area as both a cultural center of gravity and a place of natural beauty resonates with people who see it.”

THIS EVENT HAPPENS CONCURRENT with the PURUSA Exhibit at VARGA Gallery.

VARGA Gallery presents full Sensory Immersion Experience
during Woodstock Film Festival with Food, Music & Art

Woodstock, NY – Friday, October 12, 2012

On Friday, October 12, 2012 at VARGA Gallery during the Woodstock Film Festival is an event that combines the talents of singer and songwriter Kirsten DeHaan of SirLady Records with the visual art of Christina Varga of VARGA Gallery and the culinary mastery of Food Network Chopped™ Champion and celebrity chef, Ric Orlando of New World Home Cooking, as well as official Poster Artist of the WFF - artist Bill Miller. VARGA Gallery presents a Full Sensory Immersion Experience combining DeHaan's Music, Orlando's Culinary offerings and visual art by Varga and Miller, all inspired by the Music of "P U R U S A" - DeHaan's forthcoming album. Singer-Songwriter Kirsten DeHaan kicks off her National Gallery Tour at VARGA Gallery in Woodstock, NY, in a series of exhibitions dedicated to the full sensory experience of seeing, tasting, touching, hearing. The exhibit "PURUSA" opens September 29, 2012 and runs through October. The One Night Only experience happens on Friday, October 12 from 6 - 9pm and tickets are available ONLINE at www.VARGAgallery.com/ PURUSA for $20 which includes food, beverage, performance and attendance to this private, exclusive event.

DeHaan will perform each of the songs on her new album in front of the artworks they inspired created by Varga as Ric Orlando's culinary pairings of food and beverage are presented with each song. DeHaan turns the tables on traditional listening and interacting with music to emphasize a person is one who is known through sound. The word PURUSA denotes the Soul and derives from Indo-Germanic root word “Person” (per = through, son= sound) and awakens the imperative to collaborate. DeHaan founded SirLady Records in 2004 and recorded PURUSA at the World-class residential recording facility, Clubhouse, in Rhinebeck, NY. Her music has garnered over one million 2p2 downloads, a Men’s Vogue Critics Choice Award and is a leading licensor on MTV/AOL/HBO and 3rd Strand. An interactive free app download linked to the artwork and music will be offered to Exhibit attendees.

“This album is a different sound and direction for me artistically and I wanted my concerts to reflect that," says DeHaan. "What better place than a gallery to pay homage to the art of music? Too often, we look to the songwriter to tell the listener what the songs means. I am more interested in learning how the songs are received and interpreted; in this case by the audience and artists collaborating in the show.”

The exclusive event is scheduled for the same week as the Woodstock Film Festival and features a solo exhibition in VARGA Gallery's Zebra Room by the officially selected Artist of the 13th Annual Woodstock Film Festival Poster, Bill Miller, who, in addition to presenting original works including the poster image, will be creating works inspired by PURUSA. His Woodstock Film Festival poster image is an assemblage made entirely from recycled linoleum flooring called “Eye of the World”. Miller joins notable artists Peter Max, Milton Glaser and Bill Plympton who were among those previously selected for this honor. The 13th Annual festival happens October 10-14 in the arts colony of Woodstock and across the Hudson Valley region. Miller’s solo exhibit is on display next door to Upstate Films, one of WFF’s primary screening venues.
